Our Mission
Tu White School of Architecture is a resource for understanding Whiteness in American architecture and supporting collaborative action against White supremacy in design education and practice, as a part of the broader struggle against what cultural critic bell hooks calls the systems of domination, or White supremacist capitalist imperialist cisheteropatriarchy. (What does this mean? Read more here.)
We are one among many groups imagining an antiracist, feminist, queer, anticapitalist, anticolonial future for design education and practice.
We do not claim to represent the Tulane School of Architecture, nor single it out for blame. Tulane is one among hundreds of institutions which comprise American architecture, which have over more than 400 years contributed to the unjust and inequitable conditions of the profession and its practices. Tulane is considered here as a case-study site for intervention, in much the same way that White designers regularly propose interventions in Black neighborhoods and other spaces whose residents haven’t asked for them.
